VIDEO: AFRICA FASHION WEEK AMSTERDAM 2015

It was a beautiful, sunny day. Also a challenging one for me and my technical crew! The AFWA team did an excellent job organising an event of this magnitude in a historic location: The Royal Tropical Institute. There were designers from various continents in attendance to exhibit their latest collections.

We are looking forward to the next edition of AFWA.

VIDEO: INTERVIEW WITH DIANA TAMBE & AYDIN ACIK

Recently, I sat down with Diana Tambe and her business partner, Aydin Acik in a 30-minute interview.
At a very young age, Cameroon-born Diana Tambe migrated alongside  her mother to Helmod, The Netherlands. Diana has now grown into a creative fashion designer and an events organizer with an unending passion for African fashion. She is the CEO of Blackpearl Secret and the Creative Director of Africa Fashion Week Amsterdam. According to Diana, ”There is a need to celebrate the culture, arts and fashion of Africa in Amsterdam.”
Aydin on the other hand, originally from Turkey, has been in the fashion business for decades. He also started out as a model and has now built a reputation for himself as ‘The Fashion Man’.

VIDEO: AFRICA FASHION WEEK AMSTERDAM 2014

So here it is.
The maiden edition of Africa Fashion Week Amsterdam was held at the World Fashion Centre. It was a long day but it was worth it! The event was founded by Diana Tambe Blackpearl and co-organised by Aydin Acik. The hosts, Ramsey Tokunbo Nouah and Caroline Ter Linde did an excellent job. People from different sectors were in attendance. Beautiful designs were showcased by designers from home and abroad. The atmosphere was warm. It was also an opportunity for new connections.


Overall, I'd say it was a succesful event and I would not hesitate to attend the next edition

It was one hell of a show. This show took place in Rotterdam and it is Bracket's 2nd performance in The Netherlands. They performed in Amsterdam in 2009 and they had a massive audience.

VIDEO: SEUN KUTI LIVE IN AMSTERDAM

''Our politicians are thieves...'' After his performance at the MC Theater in Amsterdam, I had the opportunity to sit down with Seun and speak elaboratively with him about his music, the present situation in Nigeria, and fatherhood.




I never saw Fela Kuti perform live on stage so I feel privileged to witness Seun's performance. He gave his audience just a little piece of the ''Fela experience'' but he remained true to himself all through the performance. His own lyrics, his own moves, his own gestures, his own interpretation of art. He is a bundle of talent and creativity. I must not forget to applaud his humility.

CLUB APHRODISIACSZ OPENING WITH THE CEO DANCERS

This is the very first event am attending since the inception of Blessing Njoh Media & Events. Yes, I went solo! My own entertainment outlet.




The 22nd of March 2014 was a hectic day for me. After having spent a few hours at the office, I hurried down to Zwolle where I was scheduled to follow a LEAN 6 Sigma training. After the training which ended around 5pm, I knew it was time time to party.




I made the 146km drive to Dordrecht where my I met with my Presenter and friend. After eating a good dish of Cameroonian food at hers, it was time for a make-over. We got busy until every single corner was painted. Then, it was time to hit the road.


First stop was The Hague where we had to pick up the video camera that we would use for the night. Why, you would wonder, well, because I left my own camera battery back in Amsterdam, oops.


Camera, check! Microphone, check! Chargers, check!


All set, now off to Rotterdam, destination: Club Empire where the Aphrodisiacz show was going to be held, hosted by DJ Locco.


Overall, it was a succesful first gig for me, although not without the usual ups and downs that one would expect with a first-timer but at the end of it all, i was satisfied. And I got the chance to meet and interview some awesomely talented peole like Miss Bess and the CEO Dancers from the UK.


Fast forward to the present... I am very nervous about sharing the video because... because I did the video recording myself. Well, let's just say...watch out for the video,,, well, maybe :)

VIDEO: FASHIONSHOW DÉSAR & ARTS EXPOSITION ELS HENDRIKX 2013

On the 11th of May 2013, I made a road trip to Venlo, Southern Netherlands, to witness the 2nd edition of Monique Désar's Fashion Show & Arts Exposition by Els Hendrikx.

Last year, I could not attend the 1st edition due to some technical issues beyond my control so I promised myself that I would attend this year... and I did. I booked my ticket for the show a couple of months prior to the event just to be sure I could secure a seat. I'm lucky I did because the hall was filled to the brim: over 400 people were in attendance.

The journey to Venlo from Amsterdam was long so I decided to stay at a hotel for the night.

At the show, everything seemed to be going pretty fine until the battery of my camera ran down... any blogger's worst nightmare.... my Nokia phone did the rest of the job :)

What I learnt about Poland within my 1-week stay:

- Pork meat is widely/daily eaten in Poland

- Polish people would put a slice of lemon in tea, water, coke... I wonder in what else, but I loved it

- Don't order a Quarter Pounder at the McDonalds in Poland; they don't know what that is...

-... their ice-tea is highly diluted though

- Poland seems very stable and peaceful

- Do black folks live there? Just asking...

VIDEO: MY FIRST FLIGHT

It was a cold winter day in January. A perfect flying temperature. I developed cold feet, literally and figuratively. This is the definition of irony: an aspiring pilot with a phobia for height.

I was excited about flying, yet terrified. I had nightmares the night before. What if I crash-land? Could we die today? I made sure I knew exactly where to find the emergency eviction switch in case the parachute was needed. Check. In place.

Prepared for take off, with a very broad grin on my face. Off I flew. I flew a few hours, did some stunts that made me feel like using the sick-bag. Then landed safely.

It was an awesome experience, I loved every nano-second of it.
I was born upside down. I crawled. I walked. I ran. I jumped. I flew, I fly.

VIDEO: MODEL CONVENTION 2013

It was a great day. I was excited to be reporting from the annual Amsterdam Model Convention.

When we got to the venue, my plan was to do the intro right outside the convention centre but the snow would not let me and I did not have an umbrella with me.

Since part of the technical crew was out of the country, I called an old friend to come help out. She did a great job.

It was a long day for us.
Pitifully, I was not able to cover all aspects of the convention. At the end of the day, I was exhausted and sore.

Time to go home, the snow has worsened. But we did make a few new friends :)

My interview with Mariana Verkerk on the 24th of January 2013. Mariana has worked as a catwalk coach for Holland's Next Top Model, Benelux's Next Top Model, Norway's Next Top Model, and Model Search America. She has taken up the role of posing coach and guest judge for Scandanavia's Next Top Model and Denmark's Next Top Model, amongst others.

Mariana, who is based in New York, was recently in town to attend the just concluded Amsterdam Fashion Week and the upcoming Model Convention which she co-organises with business patner, Mauritz Briët.

After talking with Mariana, i got some very handy catwalk lessons and i also learnt that being a model isn't just about wearing clothes and being pretty, it entails hardwork and profound knowledge of the fashion industry.

For me, it was heart-warming to see young boys & girls collectively working together to achieve a common goal, "It keeps them out of trouble", one of the female Somali basketballers says.

The Amsterdam Futsal Tournament 2012 was yet again, for the 8th year in a row, a success. There were a total of 36 teams from all over Europe: England, Denmark, Holland, Norway, just to mention a few.

I had a swell time at the well-attended 3-day tournament (21th, 22th & 24th of December). One thing I can say about the Somali people is that they are humble, hospitable & receptive.

Contray to what some believed would turn out to be an apocalyptic event, the 21st of December 2012 came and went just like any other usual day! After the almost unbased hype about our universe annihilating on the said date, we hit the road to find out why we were all still alive on a day that was supposed to mark the end of time. Our destination was the popular Amsterdam Bijlmer, a neighbourhood that houses people of over 150 nationalities across the globe. What I can conclude from all the interviews i held on this supposed doomsday is that the people of Bijlmer do not believe in the Armageddon. For them, "The world will never end, not even in a billion years." Did you say stash up food?

VIDEO: REPORTING FROM LADY PONCE'S SHOW

Like I said before, there is no such thing as a coincidence. On the night of Lady Ponce's show, Rita and I hit the road towards Rotterdam. Getting to the venue, there was absolutely no parking space so we decided to go in search of one! Little did we know that that was going to be the beginning of an entirely new journey. Yes, we drove in circles for more than 2 hours, in search of a place to park. At a point in time, I suggested we park on a free spot reserved for the disabled but of course, that did not seem like the perfect idea we needed at that time, so the search continued... After driving for about 45 minutes more, we found a place to park miles away from the event location and we thought we would just leave the car there and walk back to the event. But the navigator said that would be a walk of 10 minutes ... 10 minutes on heels? NEXT!.

So we got back into the car, then a call came through. It was a call from one of the organisers of the event. He wanted to know where we were. He also wanted to let me know that they needed me to MC the show because the planned MC could no longer make it to the event... We told him of our dilemna and he came to our rescue :) He came out to the main road, jumped into the car and led us through to the VIP parking space and the rest was history: In one night, I was reporter, MC, and 'Cameratician'. I have been fortunate enough to meet some incredible people and been given the opportunity to do some adventurous stuff in the past couple of weeks. A big shout out to my girl, Rita Batuo, for helping make this happen.

There is no such thing in life as a coincidence! If it happens, then it was meant to happen. Lady Ponce is arguably Cameroon's hugest artist at present. She arrived Rotterdam Central Station, The Netherlands, on the 24th of November at 15:00 local time on a Thalys train from Paris. We were at the station  to receive her, whereafter we headed straight to her hotel for this interview. In my opinion, she has a warm soul, and I believe those who have met her would agree with me on that. She is down-to-earth.

Last but not least, she is a 'magic dancer'. After the interview, we ran off to prepare for the show. To know what happened at the show, watch out for my next blog.
